On February 13, a native of the Kirov region, Alexei Chervotkin, won Olympic gold as part of the Russian cross-country skiing team. In the 4 x 10 km relay, four Russian athletes overtook their rivals by more than a minute.

This victory was the first gold in the men's relay in 40 years. She was expected. The whole country is running with you! — wrote the Russians in social networks.

The entire village of Darovskoy, the small homeland of the athlete, was rooting for Alexei Chervotkin. And today, many residents have already congratulated the parents of the Olympic champion.

But most of all, his parents, Ekaterina and Alexander Chervotkin, worried about Alexei. They watched the Olympics from Darovskoye, and it was they who were the first to receive a call from Alexey.

– They didn’t talk for long, he was invited to the awards ceremony. He promised to call back in the evening, – says Ekaterina Yurievna.

According to the woman, she did not watch Alexei's star race – she was too worried about her son.

– Father is watching, I just come up and ask: how is Alyosha doing? He tells me, and I drink valerian. And I think: at least he would break away, at least they would not catch up with him! Then at night I watch the replay calmly.

Race conditions were difficult: -15 degrees, strong wind, snow. No one knew in advance how the skiers would cope this time. But Aleksey, who ran the first stage of the relay, immediately set the tone, breaking away from his rivals by more than 20 seconds.

Nobody foresaw this! We thought everyone would run together this time. And Alyosha ran ahead, as in previous competitions.

The first two performances were not so successful. In the skiathlon, Alexei Chervotkin came in 36th, and in the classics – 5th. Heavy acclimatization prevented showing better results.

– After the first race, Alyosha said that he would like to run, but his body did not give how he got under a wave. The second ran much better, heaven and earth compared to the first, but still the stiffness still remained.

But in the third race, Alexei made up for lost time in full. Ekaterina Yuryevna is sure that the biggest thanks for this should be said to the coach Viktor Vereshchagin. It was he who brought Alexei to the people, the woman believes.

– In our village there is nothing special to do, Lesha literally slept with skis. Many thanks to coach Viktor Vereshchagin, all thanks to him!

During the Olympic race, Viktor Vereshchagin judged the Ski Track of Russia in Darovskoye. As the coach said, every lap people came up to him and told him how many seconds Alexey managed to win back.

— I am very happy for Alexei! I was hoping it would still come true! When he took 36th place in the skiathlon, we sent a text message: “Alexey, we believe in you!” And already at 15 kilometers he performed perfectly. And today's performance is something super-possible. After so many years, we have the second Olympic champion after Yuri Skobov,” says Viktor Vereshchagin.

Igor Vasilyev, Governor of the Kirov Region, congratulated Alexei and his teammates on the victory.

“Today our athletes brought great joy to all the fans and became the pride of Russia. The last time we took gold medals in the men's Olympic relay was 42 years ago in 1980. How nice to realize that our countryman Alexei Chervotkin has become part of the victory today. I think that this is a great merit of the coaches, whose experience, knowledge, perseverance are invested in the preparation of the Olympians, – said Igor Vasiliev.

The Olympic victory – 2022 coincided with another significant date. Exactly years ago, a native of the Kirov region, skier Yuri Skobov, became the Olympic champion at the XI Games in the relay in Sapporo. Before the start of the Olympics in Beijing, Yuri Georgievich noted that our team had every chance of winning, and he was right.
