Photo April 2014cavitation (from lat. cavita – emptiness) – the process of vaporization and subsequent condensation of vapor bubbles in a liquid flow, accompanied by noise and hydraulic shocks, the formation of cavities in the liquid (cavitation bubbles, or caverns) filled with vapor of the liquid itself in which it occurs. Cavitation occurs as a result of a local decrease in pressure in the liquid, which can occur either with an increase in its speed (hydrodynamic cavitation), or with the passage of an acoustic wave of high intensity during the rarefaction half-cycle (acoustic cavitation), there are other reasons for the effect. Moving with the flow to an area with a higher pressure or during the half-cycle of compression, the cavitation bubble collapses, while emitting a shock wave.
cavitation pool – an experimental pool enclosed in a sealed enclosure and equipped with equipment that regulates atmospheric pressure above the free surface of the water. In the Cavitation Pool, cavitation phenomena are simulated that occur when the body and its protruding parts, as well as propellers, are flowed around. A distinctive feature of the Cavitation Basin is the possibility of studying the combined effect of cavitation and free surface on the hydrodynamic characteristics of ship structures. Models are towed using a trolley or carriage.
cavitation pool is used for:
– testing hydrofoil models, insulated propellers of fixed and adjustable pitch, propellers in a nozzle and on an angled column, sterndrives;
– self-propelled tests of ship models with propellers and jet propulsion;
– measurements of non-standard forces acting on the hydrofoil and the propeller, pressures caused on the hull by the operation of the propeller during cavitation.
