The secrets of the ancient dungeons of the Jesuit Collegium can be revealed in the virtual reality laboratory of Polotsk State University. There are no analogues of this project in any university in Belarus.

We'll get you there right now! – says Oksana Golubeva, Dean of the Faculty of Information Technologies of PSU, offering to experience the sensations of a virtual journey.

They put special glasses on my eyes, tactile gloves on my hands. And moving from an ordinary university auditorium to mysterious underground labyrinths happens in an instant. Everything here is as if in reality: centuries-old stone walls, massive vaulted ceilings, a mystical atmosphere with surprises in the form of a skeleton peeking out from behind a turn.

To move in total darkness, you need to take a candle prepared at the entrance and listen to further instructions. The task is clear: we are going in search of a treasure. Along the way we find an old forged key and try to guess what it opens. One, second, third attempt – and here it is, the treasured chest, where the mysterious twist is hidden. Scientia vincere tenebras, reads the inscription on the charter. Translated from Latin: Knowledge to overcome darkness. This is the path leading to success.

The first sign in the development of virtual reality software products at the Faculty of Information Technologies of PSU was the fulfillment of an order for UE Vitebskoblgaz last year. Under the guidance of Oksana Golubeva, FIT students and undergraduates created a virtual simulator for the company to train personnel serving city gas control points. Successful experience has become a stimulating factor for continuing research. The Faculty of Information Technologies is located in the buildings of the historical and architectural monument – the former Jesuit Collegium, which, after restoration, has turned into a sought-after tourist complex. Among the most popular is a tour of the dungeons. So why not create a virtual version of it in the form of an exciting quest?

Demand gave rise to supply. The development of the innovative project was carried out by second-year students Vitaly Kuzmich and Dmitry Valkovich in cooperation with the tourist center of PSU. And the university purchased special equipment for the virtual reality laboratory together with IT companies Andersen and ITS Partner.
