After the tournament was canceled last year, this time the organizers of the VTB Kremlin Cup did their best to hold it. Moreover, with the audience. True, the number of fans is limited and access to the stadiums (there are two of them – the Viner-Usmanova Palace in Luzhniki and the Luzhniki Sports Palace) is carried out strictly by QR code for vaccinated and recovered patients. According to the result of the PCR test, it will be impossible to go to the courts.

Of course, everyone was waiting for the main Russian tennis star at the tournament. Daniil Medvedev, and the athlete was on the preliminary list of participants. However, immediately after leaving the Masters in Indian Wells, Medvedev promised to listen to his condition and decide whether he would take part in the Moscow competitions, which, by the way, he has not yet won. In general, after these words it became clear that it was not worth waiting for Daniel's participation. And so it happened.

“The tournament in Moscow is a special opportunity to play at home with Russian fans. I showed up for the tournament and was hoping to play it, but due to such a busy schedule of tournaments in 2021, I felt that I was not ready to physically perform at 100%. This decision was hard for me, but I had to make it in order to finish the season with good results,” Medvedev said on the eve of the tournament draw.

President of the Russian Tennis Federation Shamil Tarpishchev once again confirmed the sad news for the fans: “We had an agreement with the guys that they would take part in the VTB Kremlin Cup, but they immediately stipulated the possibility of refusal. The top players are now tired. We see that neither Medvedev nor Tsitsipas, nor Zverev have not reached the final stages of Indian Wells, and Daniil still has to play two very important tournaments for himself – in Paris and the Final tournament, so it would be quite logical to give him a rest.Nevertheless, Shamil Anvyarovich was glad that on Monday Danya would still fly to Moscow and even talk to fans and journalists in some form.

Other star players of the tournament – Andrey Rublev and Aslan Karatsev – there is no way to rest. Tennis players reached the final of the doubles tournament in Indian Wells, where on Sunday night they will play with John Pierce and Philip Polasek. Regardless of the outcome, they will not be able to get to the Kremlin Cup until Monday.

To spend so much time in the States, flying from the other side of the world, after the heat of Indian Wells in the promising October Moscow weather, and almost immediately join the fight – it will be hellishly difficult. Moreover, the same Rublev's year was not that much easier, and he has yet to officially qualify for the Final Tournament.

In exactly the same situation was Veronika Kudermetova, who will also play in the women's doubles final at Indian Wells with Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan. But if Aslan and Andrey were among the first four seeded who miss the first round, then Veronika was not among the seeded at all.

The third musketeer Karen Khachanov, who even helped draw the men's tournament, will also miss the first round, and it will be a little easier for him. Karen flew to Moscow, according to him, just now and does not yet understand where he is. He left the Masters in the fourth round, did not take part in the doubles tournament and will start the Kremlin Cup from the second round as the third seeded (the fourth was the Serbian Filip Krajinovic). The chances of repeating his success in 2018 may even be higher than those of Rublev, who won in Moscow two years ago on his birthday.

Russian tennis players are the most stellar of all the participants. Wild card, according to Tarpishchev, was requested and Andy Marreth s Denis Shapovalov, but we give them only to our own, said the president of the FTR.

Among the girls, they were among the seeded Arina Sobolenko (1), Garbine Muguruza (2), Maria Sakkari (3), Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (4), Ons Gill (5), Angelique Kerber (6), Elena Rybakina (7) and Simona Halep (8).
