Sakhalin sharks VS. HC Riga

On February 11 and 12, the Sakhalin Sharks will play the final home matches of the Youth Hockey League 2021-2022 at Arena City. The rivals of the islanders will be HC Riga. On Friday the game will start at 19:00, on Saturday – at 14:00.

According to the press service of the island club, the Sakhalin team has never defeated the most western club of the MHL in regular time, the total score of victories is 13:1 in favor of the Latvian team. The only success of the Sharks was celebrated more than two years ago – on January 8, 2020, they won in overtime at the home arena (4:3). The westernmost exit did not submit to the Sharks. Including this season – a many-hour trip to Riga in September ended in two defeats (2:3 OT and 2:9).

Sakhalin residents have something to answer – in the standings of their conference, the easternmost and westernmost teams of the MHL go side by side. The Sakhalin team has 31 points in 54 matches, while the Latvians have 33 points in 56 matches. Before the last victorious game against SKA-Varyags (4:3), the team from the capital of Latvia issued a 20-match losing streak, unique for the West.

Girts Silkalns remains the top scorer of HC Riga with 35 points (17+18) in 54 matches. The team's most valuable player is Gustavs Millers, who has +9 in 33 matches with 17 points (10+7). It was his productive actions that allowed the team to break a giant losing streak in the last game in St. Petersburg. The Sharks' top scorer is the club's record holder Bulat Minnekhanov – 42 points (12 + 30) in 53 matches.

Goalkeepers will be special. Maxim Arefiev and Karlis Mezhsargs have been named by the NHL scouting bureau as the most promising goalkeepers in the MHL who can be selected in the upcoming 2022 NHL draft. Because full-time confrontation will be especially bright.

Sakhalin sharks and HC Riga have lost their chances for the playoffs, but continue to compete with each other. A double victory in the upcoming confrontation will help one of the teams change the situation in their favor.
