Another on-air TV channel will be opened in Latvia

Media company 4.vara won the tender for the right to broadcast the channel on free-to-air television in Latvia. By the end of this year, it is planned to launch the TV 4 channel in this country, the main purpose of which will be to broadcast informational and educational content for viewers of all ages.

4.vara was the only bidder for the production of the sixth channel, which can be distributed free of charge in all networks of Latvian cable operators. Currently, five programs are distributed free of charge in the country: LTV1 and LTV7, created by state media, as well as commercial TV programs – Re: TV, RīgaTV 24 and Sportacentrs.com TV.

The tender states that TV4 will offer a wide range of research content that motivates the public to think, discuss, analyze. The target audience of “TV 4” is the less informed part of the public who spends a small amount of time every day getting information from reliable sources on the Internet, has limited technological skills and, conversely, young people who spend little time every day watching informative content on their main screens, so it is planned to cover them with the help of a secondary television screen, the National Electronic Media Council of Latvia explained.

The Council stated that the new TV channel provides for the broadcasting of various conferences, forums and discussions taking place in Latvia, plenary sessions of the Seimas of the Republic of Latvia, and it will also reflect the course of important events in the country. During the second half of weekdays, it is planned to reach out more actively to the youth audience, but in the evening the TV 4 program will be intended for a wider audience, which will provide an opportunity to listen to presentations by leading Latvian experts in various fields. More entertainment content is planned for the weekends, not to mention cultural TV shows. The program schedule will also include materials that may be of interest to the Latvian diaspora abroad.

TV 4 also includes audience engagement – it is planned that viewers will be invited to participate in discussions by asking questions on social media, email, telephone, and other digital means. The new channel plans to make all content available on the website.

The right to free-to-air broadcast of the new TV program will be implemented from April 1 this year, the Media Supervisory Board reported.

The competition was announced by the National Electronic Media Council of Latvia at the end of last year. Its purpose was to grant the right to broadcast to the republic's electronic media in order to meet the democratic, social and cultural needs of society.
