88 Kuban athletes are included in the candidates in the Russian national team of Russia to prepare for the participation of the XXVIII Olympic Games. Among them are representatives of the cities: Krasnodar, Anapa, Armavir, Belorechensk, Gelendzhik, Hot Key, Yeysk, Sochi, Tuapse, Uspensky and Ust-Labinsky districts of the Kuban.

In 2002, as a result of performances at the competitions of the world, European and Russian levels, the athletes of the Krasnodar Territory won 534 medals, of which: 203 gold, 170 silver and 162 bronze.

Krasnodar Territory holds leading positions in the Russian Federation on the development of mass sports and sports of higher achievements. 55 sports are cultivated in the region. The most popular are: football, volleyball, basketball, athletics, table tennis, swimming, handball, Greco-Roman wrestling. For sports in the Krasnodar Territory there are 86 stadiums with stands from 1.5 thousand seats, more than 3.6 thousand flat structures, 1.4 thousand sports halls, 53 swimming pools.

One of the important links in the organization of physical culture and sports in the region is the activity of the Kuban State Academy of Physical Culture, where leading athletes and future industry specialists study. The republican school of the Olympic reserve operates on its basis.

There are 143 children's and youth sports schools and schools of the Olympic reserve, 2 schools of higher sportsmanship, 39 children's and youth physical training clubs in the region. The number of sports educational institutions is growing. In 2002 alone, 22 municipal and 7 regional sports schools were opened at the expense of the regional budget.

During the summer period, 20 out-of-town sports and recreation camps, 11 day camps were organized for students of sports schools, where 12,170 children and adolescents rested in the summer of 2002.

Much attention is paid to work with student youth. Mass multi-round competitions are held annually among academic groups, courses, faculties. In most cities and districts of the region, student sports days are held. This work is most active in Krasnodar, Armavir, Slavyansk-on-Kuban, Yeysk, Novorossiysk, Sochi, Kropotkin. The regular holding of the Kuban Universiade served as an incentive for the development of sectional work in universities. In two years, the number of students involved in sports has increased by 38%.

The tendency to reduce the number of physical education teams at enterprises, organizations and institutions has been stopped in the region. In the staff lists of enterprises, the rates of instructors-methodologists and coaches-teachers in sports began to be restored.

28 new physical culture teams have been created.The number of physical education in labor collectives increased by 8057 people.

In order to maintain physical education and recreational work with the rural population of the region into the staffing of the rural administrations of the Bryukhovetsky, Mostovsky districts, the city of Labinsk introduced the positions of specialists in physical culture. Sports clubs have been created in the Yeisk district, in the Caucasian district – sports associations in villages and villages.

The result of active physical education and recreational work at the place of residence of the population was an increase in the number of clubs and engaged in them by 70%. So, in 2002, 16 sports grounds at the place of residence and 36 additional staff units of teachers-organizers were commissioned in the regional center.

Much attention is paid to work on the rehabilitation of people with disabilities by means of physical education and sports. During 2001-2002, the number of physical education and sports clubs of disabled people and those involved in them increased by more than 2 times. The regional Federation of Physical Culture and Sports of Persons with Disabilities was created.

In the final competitions of the VI Spartakiad of the Kuban disabled people, teams from 27 cities and regions of the region took part. They purposefully work in this direction in Sochi, Krasnodar, Armavir, Hot key, Kropotkin, Absheron, Novokubansk, Seversky, Tikhoretsk, Assumption districts.

Children's sports games “Young Olympians of the Kuban” are held: at all stages of games, more than 6 thousand children and adolescents took part in the 31 -type programs in 2001 competitions.

In 2002, the XIV Spartakiad of the Kuban was held in 30 sports involving more than 5 thousand athletes, representatives of all 48 cities and regions of the region. Every year, in accordance with the Unified Calendar Plan of Sports events, about 350 championships and championships in sports are held in the region.

In the region, 184 institutions of additional education of a sports orientation operate, in which more than 120 thousand children and youth are engaged in free of charge.
